Connie Petrillo
Perth based artist Connie Petrillo, is well known for her controversial artistic style and for examining the ways in which we represent our children. Petrillo's photomedia work has previously challenged the way in which we unnecessarily sexualise our children and take away their innocence. Her work, famously autobiographical, casts a withering look at the way in which the mass media alienates and exploits our children, reducing them to commodities. She creates challenging works that asks how we should represent childhood.
The representation of children in contemporary visual art is fraught ethically and legally. A traditional subject matter of the past ‘the child’ has become an increasingly difficult issue to address in contemporary visual culture.
