Kate Koivisto Wheeler
Kate Koivisto Wheeler, UK born, is a graduate of Claremont School of Art and the Curtin University of Technology Schools of Art and Design, and has been based at Gotham Studios since its 2011 relaunch. Her work is experimental and intuitive, across painting, sculpture, drawing, photography and installation. In 2014, Koivisto Wheeler initiated and led the first Western Australian participation in SUPERMARKET – Stockholm Independent Art Fair, curating Gotham City, which promoted the Peek-a-Boo Gallery, Gotham Studios, and showed her work with that of ten other Gotham artists. She then curated an exhibition programme from this for the Perth Winter Arts Season 2014, working with Pär Strömberg (Sweden), PAPER (UK) and Gotham Studios artists: and subsequently, other artist groups including Folkloren (Sweden), Galleria Jänis (Finland) and AllArtNow (Syria). After presenting a solo exhibition, Jewel Box, at free range gallery, Perth, and launching a jewellery label, she was selected for Stations of the Cross 2016, curated by Claire Bushby; SCENE 2016, curated by Ron Nyisztor at Nyisztor Studio; and a residency at ARTLAAB, the University of Western Australia.
In 2017, she exhibited Acid Test, a solo installation, and was selected to participate in a group show of new art jewellery, VARO ELUKOI LIIKKEEL, at Galleria Janis, Turku, Finland. In 2018, collaborative work by Rikard Fåhraeus and Kate Koivisto Wheeler, part of a long term duo project, was presented in the group exhibition, BESTRUCTION (stage 2) with other artists from and at Studio 44, Stockholm, Sweden as a part of Studio 44's exchange with >top, Berlin, Germany, and in September, the artists presented BESTRUCTION (stage 3) during Berlin Art Week 2018. Fåhraeus and Koivisto Wheeler most recently presented BeQuest ReVolution at the Peek-a-Boo Gallery (December 2018 - February 2019).
In July 2019 Koivisto Wheeler completed a summer residency at Hovinkartano Arts and Cultural Centre, Finland, and a winter residency at Arteles Creative Centre, Finland in January 2020, and has since been granted a third Finnish residency at Hiatus. She is currently preparing a group exhibition with 11 Perth-based artists for later this year.
