17 October - 14 November
Gotham Studios is delighted to host Ian Haig's 'Some Thing' at Peek-a-Boo Gallery in conjunction with UWA and SymbioticA's 'Unhallowed Arts' festival celebrating the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein'. 'Some Thing' is a fusion of David Cronenberg's 'New Flesh' and William S. Burroughs' transmuted bodies that populate 'The Naked Lunch'. When referring to the junkie's mutating body in 'The Naked Lunch', Burroughs sees it as losing its "human citizenship and was in consequence, a creature without a species'. 'Some Thing' is too perhaps a creature without a species, an aberration of flesh, guts and gristle that renders the human body an unclassifiable meat. It is what Burroughs refers to as un-D.T. - Undifferentiated Tissue, a condition whereby the body and its flesh liquefies and transforms into a new form. Peek-a-Boo is Gotham's window-box gallery, viewable 24/7 from James Street Northbridge, directly opposite the Alex Hotel. |
