This month Peekaboo Gallery is showcasing work by Gotham Studios' Thea Costantino, from her acclaimed Ancestors series (2012).

Ancestor V is part of an eight-part series which considers legacies of empire and colonialism. Resplendent in elaborate headdresses and dressed in second hand clothing in various stages of ruin, these ‘ancestors’ seem borrowed from military, religious and horror imagery. While satirising nationalistic and imperial nostalgia for a ‘better time’ by alluding to the violent subtext of such desires, through its title the series also considers the uncomfortable position of belonging to, and benefiting from, a colonial culture.
